What is Equine Assisted Psychotherapy?

Healing Through Connection, Reflection, and the Presence of Horses

Equine-Assisted Psychotherapy (EAP) is a unique form of mental health counseling that combines traditional therapeutic techniques with guided interactions with horses. At StableMind Wellness, EAP sessions are facilitated by a licensed mental health professional and are designed for children, teens, and adults seeking a different way to explore emotions, build coping skills, and create meaningful change.

No riding is involved. All sessions take place on the ground and focus on therapeutic activities that encourage self-awareness, emotional regulation, communication, and personal growth.

What Happens During an EAP Session?

Every session is tailored to the individual, but a typical equine-assisted psychotherapy session may include:

  • Grooming and caring for a horse

  • Leading a horse through obstacles or activities

  • Observing horse behavior and discussing reactions

  • Practicing communication, boundaries, and problem-solving skills

  • Mindfulness and grounding exercises with the horses

  • Traditional talk therapy integrated throughout the session

You do not need any horse experience to participate. Your therapist will guide you through each activity, and sessions are designed to be accessible, safe, and supportive for beginners.

Why Horses?

Horses are naturally attuned to their environment and respond authentically to the people around them. They provide immediate, non-judgmental feedback that can help clients better understand their emotions, behaviors, and relationship patterns.

Because horses live fully in the present moment, they can help us slow down, become more aware of our thoughts and feelings, and practice new ways of responding to challenges.

Many clients find it easier to open up, process emotions, and develop new insights while engaging in activities alongside a horse rather than sitting in a traditional office setting.
